I’m going on holiday (again)

Back in the Easter holidays, Manish kindly took over Permanent Style for a week, so I could completely switch off and spend time with the family.
That seemed to work well, both because the site didn't explode and because a few readers seemed to appreciate the change. (Not too much, fortunately, or I might have started to feel unwanted. Just the right amount.)
Next week Manish is doing the same thing for the second week of our holiday in Portugal. He'll write the articles for the week, and respond to comments. If there are specific ones for me, he'll leave these waiting for my return.
So enjoy, you're in good hands, and see you in a week.

Enjoy your vacation Simon. Much deserved!
Ahh Manish. Looking forward to an ” Are you a menswear snob? ” quiz or similar. Perfect August reading 🙂
Have a great trip!
I believe the grey herringbone donegal restock and the new color donegal coat announcement was originally planned for this week. Will that be coming once you get back?
No, they’ll still be done next week I think – Lucas runs those mostly anyway
SIMON, I had to laugh at the above comment!
You are very much wanted and needed and of course Manish too!
You and your family deserve a holiday and I wish you all a good break away!
Heres a wee sartorial taster from me of my finished trousers from Andrew Watson in Belfast and I will elaborate later on and include more photos of my finished trousers worn with my blue jacket. I still need that dressier belt from C&J!
Splendid!
One more.
The suede shoes are from Sanders which I didn’t buy but I’m sure that you’ll agree that the colour is somehow not “adding up”, too muddy or dull.
I do like the way that the trousers sit over the shoes though and the break.
Enjoy your well-deserved break!
Please bring back some thoughtful anecdotes about the Portuguese way of dressing.
As a fellow Iberian, I’m really interested.
Simon enjoy your break! What are you wearing on your feet?
I’m bringing three pairs of shoes:
– Black espadrilles
– Rondini sandals
– Doek canvas shoes
Hi Simon, if memory serves me well you go to Portugal a lot. I have never been as I usually go to Italy, having family connections there, but it seems like an omission. You have asked about whether PS readers would like you to touch on other topics other than clothing, perhaps a short guide to the Portugal you know could be something you can do?
Thanks Nick. It’s because my wife’s family are from here. Not sure there’s much to write about for PS that’s Portugal-specific, but I’ll have a think!
Maybe you could explain how seemingly all of the newer midmarket segment menswear brands seem to produce in Portugal. Does the country have a tradition of manufacturing, or is it something that has evolved more recently?
It’s evolved a lot in the past 30 years – through government support and a little through EU money. It’s effectively made Portugal the default choice outside Italy for a lot of clothes, especially jersey
There is a lovely little glove shop in Lisbon called Luvaria Ulisses. My wife and I both got pairs there when we visited quite a few years back and they have aged well and were reasonably priced. Worth a visit if you have a chance.
Thanks. We won’t be in Lisbon (only Porto) but great to have the recommendation for the list
I think an additional reason is customer bias and perception over where things are made. Coming from a retail perspective I’ve had customers turn their nose up at goods made in east Europe believing it’ll be cheap labour so in turn poorly made. I get no such pushback with Portuguese made garments even though average wages there are lower than Poland, Czech Republic, Romania amongst others.
Interesting, and yes I can see that.
enjoy!
Hi Simon,
I believe the black polo knitwear you are wearing is still pending to be launched? As I do not see it on the PS shop.
Thanks
Rupesh
It is, yes
Hi PS Team, is it possible to place a pre-order for the black Finest Polo?
No, sorry JC. We only do pre-orders for a couple of items each year, as a way to offer different colours or sizes. We run a waiting list instead
Enjoy your well deserved break Simon
Thanks Santosh
I’m in Portugal now ( leaving today after three weeks ) what path are you heading for ?
We stay in a house near to Guimaraes usually
Good – love Portugal – we’ve been five times this year. Have fun 😎
Enjoy your vacation!
ENJOY YOUR TIME OFF THE FAMILY…PEACE AND MUCH CHEERS!!!
SIMON,did you have your tatoos removed?
No, I only have one and it’s still there
Have a great trip and make sure to share outfit and scenery photos lad.
Hi Simon,
Enjoy your holydays with your loved ones!
John
Cheers John
Safe journey and enjoy.
Enjoy the holiday. I am not all that much into the world of mens fashion generally but your advice has helped me sharpen up my suit game when I need to look put together and your appreciation for British brands and quality is admirable.
That’s really lovely to hear, thanks Oli
Enjoy the much deserved break!!
When you get back, you recently mentioned a couple of Hong Kong tailors transplanted to New York. I can’t find the article. Do you recall who the tailors happened to be?
Thanks!
Happy Holidays Simon 😎 I’m very fond of Manish as well 🥳 Generally the all of PS Team!
A bit late but happy holidays. Did/have you considered visiting any of the clothing manufacturers while you’re in Portugal?
