Issue 2 of Permanent Style Magazine: Bigger, better, exclusiver

||- Begin Content -||

The Autumn/Winter issue of our magazine is live today, and it’s an expansion on the first issue in many ways.

The most important for me is that there are now five articles - plus the cover story - that are exclusive to the magazine. This was something I wanted to evolve from issue 1, and have as a consistent feature going forward.

Those articles will also often be longer and in depth, of a type that works best in a magazine rather than online. In this issue Manish goes on a walking tour of Madrid, for example, and talks to friends throughout the city about what determines Spanish style. At over 3000 words and with original photography and illustrations throughout, it is much more suited to print.

Those illustrations were ones we commissioned from Rodrigo Saldana by the way, co-foudner of Momos tailors in Alicante, showing two archetypes of Madrid style in particular.

The other exclusive articles are:

  • A guide to cowboy boots, by Nico Lazaro
  • How I learned to embrace fashion cycles, by Jeff Hilliard
  • Nathan Turk and the development of western style, by Ethan Newton
  • Worn without words, by Oliver Dannefalk

Then there’s also the cover story, for which we spent the day at the Attolini workshop in Naples. Attolini had been a hole in Permanent Style’s coverage over the years, given we’d written about the best bespoke tailors in the world and most of the best manufacturers - Brioni, Kiton, Belvest etc.

This filled the gap and satisfactorily so, because the work at Attolini was the best of any large-scale atelier we’d seen. Interestingly, most of the cloth they use is British rather than Italian - Scottish tweed, Irish linen, English flannel.

However, the first thing a reader will probably notice about the new magazine is that some have an extra mini-magazine: a Guide to Shirt Fabric.

This is a supplement that is only available with the first 1000 copies. The first 750 were sold to our friendly stockists around the world, and the remaining 250 are available on the PS shop now.

The supplement is based on our online shirting guide, with several technical updates and new imagery, and it was produced in collaboration with Thomas Mason.

Elsewhere the magazine has our London shopping guide (updated), the guide to the best ready-to-wear trousers, three reader profiles, two reviews and much more.

The features are now a focus of the contents, and there’s a new seasonal intro at the front, where the team run through what’s top of their wishlist for Autumn/Winter, what thing they’re looking forward to wearing most, and which outfit they’re looking forward to donning as well.

It’s bigger and better, and I’m glad to say that sales to shops and newsagents are bigger than last time as well.

Now, we’ve learnt the hard way that distribution to newsagents is not the fastest, or the clearest. We still don’t know which shops in France or Japan bought Issue 1, only that the local agent bought them. A reader said he saw a copy in Tsutaya, which is lovely, but that’s the kind of info we working to.

So for the moment we’re just listing the menswear shops that have bought Issue 2, below. We know there are a bunch that now have the magazine on standing order - Papercut in Stockholm, Shreeji in London, Iconic in New York and about 20 others, but we can list those at a later date when more are confirmed.

Note that a lot of the menswear shops have also restocked Issue 1, in case you missed it, and are buying the now restocked Style Guide and Casual Style Guide books.

Thank you very much, everyone, for your support.

In other news, we’ve failed so far to wrangling a subscription system out of Shopify, but given there’s only two issues a year, that’s hopefully not too much extra hassle for readers. (I’m assuming people wouldn’t want to sign up for more than a year, but if I’m wrong please shout.)

Oh, and we have a lovely launch party tonight in New York! It’s open to all, at the Buck Mason store in Soho. Really looking forward to that one. Invite below

Some wonderful bolts of tweed on the cover there! I would really love more information on where to get my hands on vintage fabric (apart from Lafayette Saltiel Drapiers). Order for magazine placed

Nick

Do you happen to know if any of them sell by the meter or does it have to be as part of an order?

Chris West

Do you know of anywhere i can still get issue 1?

Thanks

Patrick

Congratulations on the next issue, it seems that you basically understood what The Rake and Plaza Uomo don’t (let alone GQ or Esquire, which are shells of their former selves):
Menswear magazines are about
– aspiration
– through beautiful pictures
– on paper (!)

Well written articles matter, but I’d argue that we mostly go back to glance at well-dressed people who don’t look like models but real people when we grab older issues of magazines. Glad to see there is hope!

Robert

Agree with Patrick about aspiration. We want a physical magazine that will stir our imagination. Continue to show us high resolution photos or rich, textured fabrics for the upcoming season. Cloth that draws our eye and makes us dream about creating something beautiful. The lovely cover photo is a great example of what we want.
Your magazine cover transports us to handling those fabric bolts, commissioning a jacket, trousers or suit. We look forward not only to wearing the creation, but admiring it hanging in our closet. Your magazine can be magic.
Best,
Robert

Hi Simon,
Well done on getting the second issue of the ground. Bit like the second album’ ; more of a challenge.
On the subscription point. I’d tend to agree that it’s not really necessary for a biannual publication. I’d suggest quarterly is the minimum and that frequency is a whole new ball game. All the best

Amon

Lovely, just ordered a copy. Will be a nice addition to the collection of menswear magazines and books!

Sebastian

What exactly would I find at these stores you list for each contry?
Products by Buck Mason?

Howie

Congrats all. Can we buy the magazine at the New York pop up this week? Travel safe.

Tamaki

Hey Simon, great news! I’m looking forward to reading it.

Just a small comment: I recommend changing the photos in the shop to be those of the second edition, else it might confuse people

Chancellor

Some great stuff listed for this issue!
I see Issues Magazine Shop in Toronto, Canada isn’t listed as a stocklist. Is it just left off since it isn’t a menswear shop? Or has it been dropped? Seems like it sold out through them, so I hoped it was a success on their end. (Unfortunately, it took 2 months for stock to get to them.)

Ret

Well done, but ‘exclusiver’ isn’t a word as far as I know.

BB

Grammar police coming for you Simon! Congratulations to all the PS mag team for another special issue.

Rainer

Ha! I didn’t even notice. In German, it’s exactly the right word 😉

Daniel

Just picked up a copy. Excited!
Unrelated, but I saw a post on Lucas’ instagram today of you wearing a tan corduroy jacket/overshirt. Could I ask where that is from?

Akis

I’m so happy someone asked what i was thinking about. What a great combo with the black jeans and the ecru top. Looking forward to the article

Jae

Will copies be available to purchase at the Buck Mason party tonight? Can’t wait, thanks! 🙂

Luciano

I can’t believe you did not find any stockist in Italy to sell the magazine. Milano, Naples, Rome ?

Luciano

Don’t know exactly why you want/need “modern ones” but, for instance, Cilento could have been a perfect place to have your magazine for sale, both in Naples and Milano.Or Marinella in all 3 cities. I know Italy is not brilliant now for RTW but worse than Indonesia… (with all due respect to Indonesia).

Carl

Great, I liked the first issue and has ordered this. I really like that you cover Attolini. Your (earlier) focus on bespoke has limited the articles about “high-end MTM” and RTW. My experience is limited but I would say that Attolini is among the very best tailoring houses even if they dont (to my knowledge) do bespoke. I would say that the handiwork beats most bespoke houses. They have also stayed true to their tailoring roots (AKA dont tried to be a designer brand) in a way that Kiton, Brioni and Ermenegildo Zegna havent.

Maurice

One idea, not sure if its a good idea, but — what about including an “In Memoriam” section in the magazine or on this site? I just saw Derek Rose passed away at 93, see https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/15/style/derek-rose-dead.html
Lovely pajamas.

Amery

I’m a New Yorker and sad that I can’t make it tonight to meet the PS folks and have a Scotch (also kind of relieved because I wouldn’t know what to wear). Congrats on the second issue, can’t wait to pick it up a copy on Sunday!

SG

Hi Simon,

Awesome. Looking forward to a copy. By the by, I live in a large North American city with no stockists. If you want me to put in a good word, let me know.

ETHAN

Hi Simon, Excited to give the magazine a read. Since Los Angeles has a few Buck Mason locations, is there a specific location which will be stocking it?

A

Well done Simon and PS team. I’m a big fan of Cesare Attolini and I look forward to reading this.

Richard

Hi Simon,

I may have asked you this before but is there likely to be a restock of the selvedge chambray shirts?

Cheers

Nicola R.

Bravissimi!

Oliver

If helpful I did see two copies of the first edition in Tsutaya Roppongi Hills in late July and it made me smile. Great to see you are adding more exclusive content to the second one!

John

Do you know when this might be in shops in London? I asked in Drake’s and A&S Haberdashery this morning but neither had received it yet.

Andrew

With respect, it’s rather bad form not to allow the images to be enlarged in order to legibly read excerpts from the articles in the magazine. Such a gesture would have served only to affirm your readers’ interest in the product and demonstrate (presumably) fine writing and content; it could hardly be conceived as a handout.

Ali

Is Irish linen British? (Not being entirely facetious, as I don’t know whether the major mills are more in the North vs the Republic)

Michael Hible

Hi Simon –

In Nashville for a few days – called both Buck Mason locations in hopes of grabbing a copy and neither had knowledge of stocking issue 2. Can you confirm they are in fact stocking?

A U

Pulled the trigger on the new issue. I appreciate a physical way to read Permanent Style, which I consider to be the best men’s style blog out there. Figure it’s a fair trade for all the free articles I’ve read over the years. Also, tally my vote for a subscription model. It’s not that I really mind having to manually order a magazine a couple times a year, it’s about the principle of it. A subscription magazine is much more “classic,” wouldn’t you agree? Let it be a fun surprise in my mailbox. Cheers.

Greyson S.

It seems that the shipping price for the magazine is stuck at $27 for express shipping to the east coast of the US. I’m just wondering if this seems “correct” or if I’m missing something, like a non express option that isn’t coming up. I’m just having a little trouble swallowing shipping that costs as much as the magazine itself, but maybe that’s the fault of tariffs!! Best,

Alex

Out of curiosity, how would one go about interesting a local shop in stocking the magazine? The closest one to me is a three hour drive away, one way.

Ali

Hello Simon, could you please let me know where this magazine can be purchased? Additionally, I will be in London on 14 November. Will this issue still be available at that time?

Ali

Great, thank you.

Daniel

My copy just arrived this morning! Looking forward to going through it later this week.

Off-topic, but can I ask about that washed black looking baseball cap you were wearing in a insta post but Lucas today (and the other day)?

Nezar

Hi Simon,
Very happy to see the coverage of Cesre Attolini , and bought the magazine for that reason (my first purchase but will probably buy the first edition and later editions as well down the line).
As you could tell from my earlier comments on this website I’m a big fan of Cesre Attolini. I’m looking forwards to seeing the write up on the Jacket they’re making for you, especially as the coverage in the Magazine seemed to me to be pretty brief (I would have loved to see lots more).
On the article on RTW trousers in the magazine, is there a reason why brands like Brioni and Cesare Attolini were not included? Brioni make very good trousers and Cesare Attolini’s tailored trousers are arguably the best there are (and likely the most expensive). Just seemed odd not to include them given Permanent Style had just been to their Attelier.
I would love to see coverage of their knitwear as well somewhere down the line (even if brief) as it is really rather wonderful.

Nezar

Thanks Simon. All understood. I agree that while their tailored trousers are brilliant the pricing on one pair is really more than what most people would pay for a suit (or two) off the better RTW brands on the highstreet (Boggi and the like)!
Perhaps in the future the articles on best RTW items can, where appropriate, have an additional sentence or two putting the choices published in context (for example with the RTW trousers the article could mention in passing that there are more expensive brands out there that make excellent trousers but that you wanted the selection in the article to fall within a certain price bracket (or something similar)). I think that will help the readers better place the choices published within the wider ‘landscape’ of what’s out there.

Guy

Hello Simon
How is the magazine packed for post please? The mail can be a bit ‘rough’ (it would ne nice to get it in good unbent condition) and it doesn’t look as though Dicks aren’t taking it this time (looking at the list at the bottom of the page) for me to collect a copy locally.
Cheers, Guy.

Lucas Nicholson

Hi Guy, Dicks have placed an order, they just missed out on the first batch of shipments so it should be with them next week.

Guy

Excellent, thank you Lucas.

Madhav

Where can we find it in India?

Ankit Malhotra

Is there no electronic version of the magazine?

Nick C

Hello Simon

apologies if this has already been answered recently but do you have an update on when the next PS magazine issue will be published please?

Thank you and keep up the good work

Nick C

Thanks, and great – looking forward to it!
