*The magazine will be available online on PS on March 26. A list of stockists will also be published then*
*Tokyo magazine launch confirmed for Friday April 4th, 6-8pm, at Brycelands*

I told you a lot of exciting things were happening this year.

In two weeks’ time we will be releasing our first proper magazine - called, of course, Permanent Style - to readers and shops, but also newsagents and book shops. It will come out twice a year, in March and September.

It’s been a long time coming and a huge amount of the credit must go to Elliot Hammer, who has designed the magazine and managed the process, and sub-editor Bolaji Babafemi plus all the contributors (Alex, Jamie, André, Lucas, Emilie etc).

It felt like the right time to do a magazine. Permanent Style is 18 years old, large and influential (2 million readers last year) but with a lot of great content that is rather restricted on a computer screen (or increasingly, a mobile one).

The quality of what PS does has increased hugely over the years, compared to the little 300-word blog posts we used to do. Now we’ll spend a whole day at the epic Real McCoy’s headquarters in Japan, or summarise my experience with 60 of the world’s best tailors, all in one article.

Those kind of pieces deserve a big, hard-copy print on nice paper. Showing the magazine proofs to friends and readers recently, I was interested that the consistent reaction was how different the reading experience was to online - seeing everything presented together, noticing things for the first time, appreciating colours and combinations.

In an ideal world, this would have been the format of Permanent Style for a long time. It suits the material (and all the materials!) much more.

Over time, an increasing amount of the magazine will be in print first, designed for that format. In this first issue, that applies to the cover story and to the illustrations we commissioned.

Elliot knows a few great cartoonists, and we asked a couple to do particular pieces for Lucas’s feature on independent shops, and for a Tokyo shopping guide. (Each issue will have a particular geographic focus, and this one is Japan - it has its own section in the magazine on a different paper stock). Elliot then added his own designs to several features, like the ones above.

Finally there was the cover story - an interview with the wonderful Yasuto Kamoshita - which is exclusive to the magazine. We interviewed Kamoshita-san on a very hot evening in Milan, and then commissioned photographer Aoki Ulysses to go to his home in Tokyo, shooting him in several outfits around the house and garden.

The magazine will be released on March 26th. It is 150 pages long, with 28 articles and lots of photography.

Quite a few advertisers have supported it, which is wonderful. (Frankly, it’s the thing that makes it possible.) I won’t mention them all here, but one thing that meant a lot to me was that Anderson & Sheppard wanted to advertise - the only advert they have ever done in their history.

The magazine will cost £20 in the UK and then vary in shops around the world. It will be in selected newsagents as well, plus on the PS Shop online, but as with The Casual Style Guide we suggest that you support your local menswear store where you can, if they’ve fronted the money to stock it.

In fact, one reason for announcing the magazine now is that any shop around the world can apply for copies, and have them in stock for the launch date. We already have quite a few, but if any other shops would like to stock it please contact Lucas.

Going forward there will also be a bigger spread of writers in the magazine, reflecting the breadth we’ve managed to bring in over the past few years - people like Manish, Paul, Bernard Roetzel and others. There will always be a big chunk of me (sorry) but the PS reader has come to expect a cornucopia of accompanying people and styles.

The plan is for each magazine to have little regional focuses each time, and we might add other things like new sections and supplements as it grows.

For the moment, it’s just great to let everyone know, after over a year of working on this shiny new thing. We’re immensely proud of it, and I hope on March 26th when you can get yours, you will like it too.

There will be two launch events for the magazine, one in London and one in Tokyo. The one in London involves closing off the Royal Arcade, and is RSVP only (see below). Do email if you can come along. Meyrowitz are hosting it with us and Dalmore will be providing some great cocktails.

From someone who once started a magazine back in the 2010s I wish you all the very best of luck. It looks excellent.

Tamaki

Congrats, Simon! This is a huge initiative and one I will certainly enjoy reading in 2 weeks time

Amon

Wow! Great, great news. I’m a fan of all things analog and good fashion magazines are rare these days. GQ and Esquire are… merely shadows of themselves. Really excited for this. Will the articles be mainly from the blog or will there be exclusive print content? And a subscription service would be very nice as well!
Best of luck with this one, really looking forward to it!

Brian

Another vote for a subsription option here. I know it can be a bit of a logistical headache as a publisher, but I suspect I’ll struggle to find a newsagent or menswear shop near me that will stock it.

Stephen

Hi Simon,
On the subject of subscription. That does as I’m sure you know, help from a cash flow standpoint. If successful and you ever went to quarterly, then you could slightly discount and benefit from economies of scale. Just a thought.
Will you have copies for sale in the forthcoming pop-up?
All the best wishes for its success.

Dr Peter

Great idea and all success for this publication on its launch date!
I’ll second the idea of a subscription. I live in a small college town in the middle of Wisconsin, and there are a couple of good bookshops, but they would be hard-pressed to sell multiple copies of a magazine of this kind, given the citizenry here. I wonder if a bookshop in a slightly larger city like Madison could be persuaded to order copies, on a trial basis. I’ll ask around.

Christopher

Hi Peter, I work for a menswear shop in D.C. called Old House Provisions that’ll be stocking the magazine. We’d be more than happy to ship you a copy if you’d like.

Calvin

Simon, I wasn’t fully supportive of the magazine idea in the recent survey but this looks very nice and I’m happy you followed your gut! Very glad you fleshed it out with interviews and more content to Make it a healthy 100 plus pages.

I’m not seeing a clear breakdown but If I’m reading correctly, it seems like it’ll be an upgraded format from the ps blog posts (more photos maybe, extended articles) in some ways, some magazine-only articles and illustrations, and in other ways just leverage the fact that some PS articles already may already qualify as magazine content under today’s standards.

I hate to say this but, reading between the lines, it seems like the blog will end up behind a paywall or cease to make sense for you to produce. Why read the blog, if I can just buy the magazine, and vice versa. If I may ask, how are you thinking about it?

Calvin

Hey, you’re preaching to the choir! Glad to hear you plan on continuing the site even if the print becomes successful

John

Very best wishes for the launch and the subsequent sales success of the magazine. Exciting times for you and the team!

Tamaki

Forgot to mention, but this longer article format is something I was missing from the site. I feel that there isn’t much new for me on the site after reading it for the last 5 years. I of course still read it, but as the articles need to be short, I feel they wasn’t so much new knowledge from what already exists spread through the platform. The longer articles seems like they will nicely address this

Andrew B

Hi Simon. Wow, congratulations on this exciting project. Will the magazine be available for sale on this PS Shop, and will you do subscriptions? All the best. Andrew

Aaron D

Congratulations Simon. I definitely think using it to highlight other writers more will be good.
I will check both my local menswear shop and newsagents for the magazine, helpfully only one door apart from each other.

P.F.

Do you plan to have a subscription or online buying service like L’Etiquette? In some places of the Continent (like NL) could be difficult to find…

Stephen Dolman

Hi Simon,
I wish you all the best and future success.
Will it be monthly, bi monthly etc?
Regards
Stephen Dolman

Stephen Dolman

My mistake,
I didn’t read it properly

Stephen Dolman

Hi Simon,
Will you list some of the London stockists
Newsagents, men’s wear shops etc?
Regards
Stephen

Matthew V

Reading online is great, but a well produced physical magazine will be lovely too. The only downside I can see is that I will be starting yet another collection…!

Lindsay McKee

Very exciting indeed and I wish you congratulations and every success for the future with this beautiful magazine.

Jon

Best of luck with it. How often are you planning to publish?

Carl

Great! I really hate that my trip to London is the week after. But I will try to pick it up even if I miss the party.

Rafael

This is very exciting

Alex

Ohhh, that’s exciting! Will there be a way to order it online, for those of us not in the UK and not lucky enough to live near a shop that stocks it? I’d love to have a copy but barring any specialty magazine stores or menswear shops around here, I doubt I’ll be able to grab one off any shelves. I second the idea about a subscription as well!

Fred

Very exciting; can’t wait. Best of luck Simon and team.

Daniel

That is awesome! Congratulations, Simon!

Where will the news about the Tokyo launch even be shared? new blog post, insta, email?

S Watters

Oh a Tokyo launch!! Please do 5 April 😉

Jay

Hi Simon, just wondering if the Tokyo event requires registration of some sort, or if it’s a walk-in event?

Hope to see you there.

Fernando

Looks great, even though i would love it if there was a digital version of it. I have “The finest menswear in the world” and “the style guide” and i almost never read them because they are not the most practical format even though the content is great and i would read it more if i had it in the ipad. They serve more as decoration nowadays at my home

Paul

I second this. Congratulations on the launch, and I especially appreciate you all targeting menswear retailers for them to carry in-store to potentially reach a different(?) audience. However, I personally see absolutely no need to have a physical copy along with all the energy and resources gone into the making and shipping of it, much less have another item to store in my home. With regard to the revenue, I would consider purchasing a digital version if it was well adapted for the iPad (Fernando, certainly you’ve also seen this done poorly for the iPad, so it would take some additional design).

The cost notwithstanding, I am waiting for the day when VR/AR is implemented well for men’s fashion, as this is one of the few areas where I think it would have practical, experiential use to me. I’m calling it now–Permanent Style one day will have a VR/AR experience!

Craig

Congratulations to Simon and the whole PS Team on this great news. Will there be a list of stockists closer to launch time? Or will I have to do some scouting?
I’m aware I can always buy online, but would be interested to know if anyone near me will be stocking (I’m fairly local to Glasgow, if relevant).

Craig

Great, I can always pop in next time I’m over in Edinburgh.
Thanks Simon.

Dirk

Brilliant news, Simon – well done to you and the team! I’ve actually grown quite fond of the current online format. Three times a week hits that sweet spot – enough to keep me engaged.
Bit curious about the print shift, if I’m honest. Will be interesting to see how it translates (hopefully not buried under a mountain of adverts?).
One thing that’s always puzzled me though – what exactly are we meant to do with these glossy magazines once we’ve read them? Do they become coffee table trophies, or is there some clever second purpose I’m missing?
All the best with the launch!

Murray

Hi Simon
1st time commenter long time reader
Love the idea of a physical edition and very excited.
People like John Simons produce prints relevant to the brand, seeing the artwork of the buildings featured in this article (no doubt in the magazine) would be nice to be able to purchase these.
What are your thoughts on that?
Very good luck.
Murray

Murray

Yes, hopefully through your site.

Amit

All the very best Simon, Lucas, Manish and the PS Team! I know for sure the magazine will not be a disappointment or a dud 🥳

Martins

I hope over time website will remain 3 times a week?

I on the other hand am not a fan of paper prints. I can have a whole library in my pocket. And that library would take a separate house to store in print…

Leif

Ah, Martins, but walk into a used book store and you will stumble across content you never would have thought to search online.

Just a friendly jab.
Regards.

Jude

Looks fantastic, this is really exciting news. There are too few good menswear magazines out there and much as I love reading PS online I still love an actual magazine in my hand to look through.
Good luck with it all, I’ll definitely be buying on launch day!

Markus S

Simon, this is and looks great. Congratulations. An exciting year for you and your co-workers at PS.

Ecnarf Nitram

Interesting initiative. I never quite figured out whether the Hodinkee magazine was a great idea or a terrible idea (sometimes both, I assume) but a brave one nonetheless.

Alexander

Dear Simon. One of the nice things about the online format is the ability to engage with the author, and understand other readers’ experience of brands/issued. For instance, I would expect the red carpet to be rolled out for you given your 2m readers, but when you hear consistently from readers how excellent the service at (eg) Anglo-Italian is, that becomes even more useful.

It would be nice if after the magazine was published, you were able to have an area on PS online for such engagement about the printed articles.

J-K-F

One can only emphasise once again the urgent need for a subscription option.

El Chango

This looks fantastic, hoping I can snag a copy from a shop near me

Joe

Need a sub option for US readers!

Mike

Congratulations!

Isaac Milton

I think this is now the second or third time where I will be in London just in time to not make it to a PS event! I really need to work on my timing for these things. Congratulations to you and the team though, Simon, and I’ll make sure to pick up a copy. I really enjoyed the style guide books so I have high hopes for this new PS print artifact.

Simon G

Exciting news!
Saw the other comment that a list of stockists will be available closer to launch but any sense on if there will be any Canadian stockists?

John

What bookshops or outlets in Scotland will sell your magazine?

Tristan

PS has arrived ! Cheers.

Will you be able to produce a list of partnered shops / newsagents throughout the world for folks living outside the UK ?

Wishing you godspeed with this proiect

Anda

Many congratulations to the whole team – we cannot wait to see the first issue and look forward to seeing you all on the 27th.

Gabe

These magazines will become collectors items!

Brian

Fantastic! I immediately reached out to two shops here in NY to try and get them to stock the magazine.
Best of luck.

Theo

Great news, congratulations to you, I very much look forward to reading it

Erik

Simon, congratulations, it sounds exciting!
I am all for longer texts, but I prefer to read them on the screen. Will there be an online issue as well?

Erik

Do let us know if you reconsider. The online issue could of course be behind a paywall.

Philip Patrick

Great idea! When’s the Tokyo launch party? I’d love to come along.

Simon Chambers

This looks great! how can I find out if any of my local shops will be stocking it in Toronto?

Simon Chambers

Awesome, thank you!

J

Simon – I’m not really sure what you mean by the following:

“Over time, an increasing amount of the magazine will be in print first, designed for that format. In this first issue, that applies to the cover story and to the illustrations we commissioned.”

Is the magazine both soft and hard copy? Is the blog disappearing?

Would you clarify?

N

Simon, do you think it will be carried in the United States?

Leif

I recommend the The Andover Shop in Cambridge, MA, and just for my own personal reasons. Ha, Ha! Then I can stop in there, get the latest PS magazine and the latest issue of Matt Hranek’s Wm. Brown magazine.

This is a great idea of yours, by the way. As has been mentioned elsewhere on this thread, GQ and Esquire have gone off the deep end, complete freak shows at this point. GQ’s a long conversation — great stuff in the ’80s, when I read it as a teen, tasteful with just the right amount of “edge” or “high fashion”, then in the ’90s was all interviews with sports stars and various celebrities; it was all downhill from there.

Michael K.

For those in the Philadelphia area, I confirmed with Junior’s (the excellent, well-curated menswear shop on 16th between Spruce and Locust) that they will be stocking the magazine and advise keeping up with their Instagram for information on availability.

Richard

Permanent Style is 18 years old! It feels like I just started reading yesterday and I’m eagerly awaiting the first fitting of the sport coat I commissioned from a local tailor.

Christopher

This is great. Perhaps can you talk a bit about the printing and paper stock used?

Karim

How can we get a copy to Dubai?

Charles

This is wonderful news, I do miss the pre internet days of magazines with lots of good articles and actual journalism. Too often I pick up a magazine and the “articles” are just extended advertorials for their advertisers or lists of things “you must own”. L’etiquette was the only magazine I looked forward to getting and now I have this too.

If you or any other readers have any good magazine recommendations, please add it to the comments please.

Michael

Warmest congratulations to you, Simon! Hope this becomes a great success for the Permanent Style team.

Christopher

These biannual magazines work best when they strike a careful balance between timeless, coffee table-worthy content and insightful, timely analysis. Offer articles that remain relevant and engaging for years, while also include fresh perspectives that capture the „spirit of the moment“. If the focus leans too heavily on enduring themes, the magazine risks feeling more like a soft cover encyclopedia, which may not fully take advantage of the format. On the other hand, if the content is overly tied to current trends, even within classic menwear’s tight guardrails, past issues might feel less relevant over time. I’m sure given your background we’ll have a nice publication that readers enjoy revisiting, one that offers lasting value while still feeling current and dynamic upon release. Best of luck!!

Ludwig

Congratulations Simon and what great news. Call me in as a regular buyer. I wish you much success with this endeavour.

Peter Davenport

For all the benefits of the digital world, there is nothing to beat relaxing with a glass of wine and a well written and produced printed magazine. As a former journalist and magazine publisher I appreciate that this is a bold move in today’s uncertain world but one I welcome wholeheartedly. I wish you every success and look forward to purchasing the launch copy

S Watters

Congratulations on this – it looks like a great opening issue!
One question or request: will there be an electronic version? I live in Japan and obviously have limited access to a print version. I’m sure I’m not the only PS fan with that limitation.
would be great if eventually we had the option of either a) downloading an electronic version or b) obtaining an international subscription.
regardless, I wish you luck and it’s very exciting.

Jay

That’s great news! When will the Tokyo launch be? Will we be expecting an announcement via a separate medium?

Mike

Congratulations on the launch. I am very much looking forward to reading it.

Robert

Simon,

Excited for the magazine! Hope you can arrange for an in-depth article on wrist watches. As you masterfully did with your online article on the same subject, you can continue to strike that wonderful balance that entertains various audiences to include the technical watchprosite crowd, various levels of collectors/investors, as well as keeping it interesting for the casual professionals that are more focused on matching watch/strap styles with their clothing. Everything from sub 10k pieces, unique independents, to high-end pieces from the big three.

Best,
Robert

Tyrone Petterson

Congrats Simon, I can’t wait to read however, I’ve been onto your shop and under publications, your magazine doesn’t appear.
Sorry, am I missing something?

Thanks, Tyrone

Tobias

Well, imagine my surprise when I saw in the previews that the new magazine was using my GT Pantheon (the serif). Even though I’ve only been following Permanent Style for about three years, it has become an important resource for how I look at menswear, so I’m really honored that PS relies on a typeface I designed. There’s a saying attributed to Beatrice Warde, an influential early 20th century typographer: “[Fonts are] the clothes that words wear.” There couldn’t be a more fitting quote for PS. I wish you all the best with the magazine and hope I get a chance to pick up a copy in Berlin.

BB

What a special and lovely coincidence. Fell in love with that font at first sight – I dare say it will find the most discerning clothes on Permanent Style.

Thomas

Beautiful typeface. Simon and his designer chose well.

Thomas

Tobias, I just visited the piece on your font at the Grilli Type site. Fascinating and entertaining account of its creation. Wonderful animation. I recommend it to other Permanent Style readers:
GT – The Three Faces of Pantheon
Speaking of the Pantheon, I think you will find much of interest in Mark Wilson Jones’s chapter “The Enigma of the Pantheon: The Exterior” in his Principles of Roman Architecture, published in 2000.
Lastly, a few years ago Rizzoli published a book on my residential architecture. I was looking for a cover typeface that was inspired by Roman stone inscriptions of the time of Trajan and yet modern. My editors in Milan came up with a type that I find perfect:
Thomas Proctor: Classical Houses – Rizzoli New York

Santosh

I wish you all success in your new adventure, Simon..looking forward to read it in few weeks.

Joe

Can one subscribe?

Joe

Great!

Jack French

I hope it will be available in specialist magazine shops like Magalleria in Bath, where they stock L’etiquette and Avant.

A U

Congratulations, Simon! I’ve always wanted to be a guy who has a style magazine subscription but never found one that was accessible enough (I love my Japanese Ivy but they’re sadly all in Japan) or quite my style, so this will be my first!

Edwin Rothengatter

Great Simon! Congratulations and can’t wait to get my hands on a copy!

Alf Billingham

Simon,

Forgive me if I’ve somehow missed the subscription address but could you let me know who I address my details and payment to for the magazine. It looks as I’d expect, great visuals, the articles are something I can’t wait to read, and all done with the care and attention I’ve come to expect..
Best wishes,

Alf

Christopher McClancy

Congratulations! On a personal note, you have made my day. Will there be a list posted of shops who will be carrying it, and when will it be available for purchase in the PS shop?

Josh B

Looking forward to picking up a copy. A fun idea for future editions: you could include some fabric swatches as a special insert to really make things tactile. Potentially things from the PS shop or from producers that you cover.

Richard

Great news! Really looking forward to the launch and subsequent editions of PS magazine.

Juan

Congratulations and look fwd to reading (and keeping) the first number!

Thomas

Splendid news! The layout, photography and graphics look superb. I see that Buck Mason in Century City will be carrying the magazine. May I suggest you also reach out to Sid Mashburn in Brentwood? A surprising number of your potential westside LA audience never venture east of the 405 Freeway. Best of luck with this new venture!

BB

Three words – Subscribe, subscribe, subscribe!

Richard

Knowing how things always end up in australia 8-12+ months later, i hope to see it this year, ha, luck.

Michael Tolond

Good evening

Thanks for the news about the PS magazine and the contributor Bernhard Roetzel.

My reference point on men’s fashion, until the advent of Permanent Style , was Bernhard’s 1999 book ‘Gentleman A Timeless Fashion.
Regards

Joel

Can’t wait to buy it, wish there was a pre-order option.

Richard

I hope you bring copies when you next do the Trunk Show in NYC.

By the way, I received the Rifugio MTO leather shirt jacket I ordered last Fall during your last Trunk Show in NYC. It’s beautifully made and beyond wonderful. Thank you.

Hasse

Where will this be stocked in NYC? Thanks!

Roger

Will the magazine be available in Canada?

David Lilienfeld

No NYC launch celebration??

Paul

Hi will it be available at any men’s store in Los Angeles ?

Mauricio Bravo

I am sure this will be a lucky endeavor. However, I doubt that the magazine gets to México. Very few places where a English written magazine is available and, honestly, I don’t think that the menswear shops get some items to entertain their clients. Maybe Hackett, but who knows. How can we get one of them?

Dan

My goodness, that is good news. I’d say that subscribing is simply a no-brainer. Simon, I wish you the most heartfelt congratulations. I’ve been a subscriber to the newsletter/web site for so long I’ve lost track of exactly how long. But in all that time, you’ve managed to keep the quality high and I couldn’t find a better publication on the topic to support.

Zach S

Congratulations on another big step/progression, looking forward to read it. I don’t expect anywhere near me to stock it, although maybe I’ll luck out with the list of newsagents. Here’s to hoping somewhere back in Birmingham has it and I can grab one in person at Easter; would be nice to show the support as you say

Eden

Anywhere I can find it stocked in NYC?

Kenneth

congrats and good luck..it will be asuccess..cheers and much peace

Uwen

Print is always lovely and much more pleasurable to read than on a screen. Am i right in thinking some of the content of the first issue will have already been featured on the web site? perhaps i miss understood but i would suggest it would be far more desirable if it was all original content. Magazine are all expensive nowadays but asking for £20 for something i can or might have already read online might be off putting for some.

Bob

I really like magazines – my kids can’t comprehend that this is where you would get most of your information on cultural things before the internet, and that the magazines you subscribed to said a lot about you.

This would seem to be in the mould of the Noble Rot wine magazine, which I like a lot.

Jawahar

This is brilliant news, Simon. Many of us, including me, love holding and reading magazines, and are preparing to get a subscription.

Tolani

Congratulations Simon and the team on this new horizon. You guys are fantastic.

JJ Katz

Sounds very nice. Would love to come to the launch evening and grab a copy.

Thomas

Do/will you get a confirmation of your name being on the list, once RSVP?

Jonathan

Congratulations to you and the team Simon, a huge accomplishment. Looking forward to reading

Avi

Will it be stocked in Australia?

Christopher

Wow, Simon-I hadn’t even realized PS was 18 years old now. I’m so happy for your success and I know this magazine will be wonderful. Do you feel like you’re having a 360 degree moment right now, e.g. leaving your original profession to start PS and coming full circle back to print? Cheers, we can’t wait to get the first copies in D.C. at our favorite menswear shop!
