On holiday in Japan
Hello lovely readers,
Just a note to say I am on holiday in Japan this week so Manish will be taking over - as he did during both Easter and Summer last year, for a week each time.
This means he will be penning the articles on Wednesday and Friday this week, and any comments addressed to me will be answered in a week's time, although Manish will do his best to answer any more general points.
The trip is a family holiday, but as I was here and the new magazine had a Japan theme anyway, we took the opportunity to have a little launch party at Bryceland's. It was a lovely affair - graced by Kamoshita-san and some high-profile designers such as Poggy - but also friends like David Marx and Adrian Hogan, and a good few readers I'd never met before.
Thank you, Ethan et al for having us, and see everyone in a week. I love you but I need a break.
Over to you Manish!

What is the suit that you are wearing in the first photo? Hope you have a lovely holiday, Simon!
Congrats on the much deserved trip to Japan everyone needs a break and Japan is a hell of a destination.
Thanks for the great work and we are definitely in good hands.
hi simon
why is it that suiting cloths be it linen cotton or wool seem to top out at 500grams, my understanding is that heavier cloths drape better, especially trousers, i find that woolen flannels under 500grams tend to end up looking like sweat pants. Of course heavier cloths will wear warmer, but ive worn 400-500 gram cotton drill trousers in hot humid weather and did not notice them to be any hotter than your typical chinos.
Hi Dick
I can ask Simon for a fuller reply when he returns, but I think the main reason is just what’s commercially viable. Most consumers are comfortable with anything in the 350g-450g range.
Personally I think 500g (like the Fox Heritage flannel) does give good drape for trousers.
I do also agree that the extra weight doesn’t make much difference to feeling hot in Europe. In hotter and more humid countries, I might want to go lighter.
Thanks ever so much 🙂
Hi Manish,
Funnily enough, I live in Singapore I’m no stranger to heat and humidity. I suppose im just vain enough to put up with some stuffiness in order to look good. And if drapers ever release an 8ply or a 10ply, I’d be the first to commission a pair of trousers in it
Great seeing you the other day Simon! Enjoy your trip!
