MTO open for donegals, liner and cashmere knits

The seasonal made-to-order (MTO) offer that we do every spring - for delivery in early autumn - is now open and will close on April 26th, after the PS Pop-Up

The big new things this year are a quilted liner for the donegal coats, a small number of donegals in the archive colours of brown and charcoal, and a donegal special in a heavy, Fox Brothers wool.

On the knitwear side, the cashmere crewneck and cashmere rugby will also be available MTO in seven colours each, with several new ones.

The great thing about the MTO system is we can offer a really big range of colours like this - and extra small and big sizes - that wouldn’t otherwise be possible, as it would be too much stock to carry. More patience and discernment from the PS reader, equals more choice.

We're changing the name from pre-order to MTO, by the way, to make it clear that these are custom orders, and so not exchangeable or refundable. They would not necessarily be made otherwise and are just for that customer - as opposed to the pre-order on the chinos, which is a way to reserve upcoming stock. If that's not clear at all, please do shout.

The donegal liner

Let’s start with the liner, as I love how quirky it is. No other brand would offer something like this.

Hundreds of people out there have donegal coats. Some have noted that while it’s a very versatile piece of outerwear, it would be great if it could carry through into really cold weather - let’s say, when it gets down to freezing or so.

The only way to do this logistically is for us to sell a removable liner, which attaches to the coat with buttons, and to send this out to the reader with the buttons included. They then need to have a local alterations tailor that can attach the buttons in the right place - or indeed sew them on themselves, as it’s not a hard thing to do (even I can do it).

No other brand would offer this, as it requires so much from the customer. But the obvious alternative - everyone sending their coats back to the factory - would be prohibitively expensive. So again, the PS reader benefits from being more engaged and willing to put in that little bit more effort.

How much an alterations tailor charges to do this will vary, but as an indication of the top end, The Valet in London say they would do it for £80.

The liner is made of the same material as the existing lining of the coat, with wool wadding quilted into it. We specifically chose wool wadding because of how much better it performs compared to synthetics.

Wool is warmer and also responds thermodynamically to body temperature, regulating moisture and variations in activity. Having it as the wadding means you stay warm when you do things like walk briskly, or move between hot and cold places, by reducing humidity inside the coat.

I know some readers will ask how much space is required for the liner, and therefore whether it will be able to fit inside their existing donegal. Well, the liner is 6mm thick and I can fit it inside my size 4 coat, which is a neat fit on me - so much so that I did a video comparing it to a size 5, arguing I could wear either.

Also, bear in mind the liner only runs around the body of the coat - not the arms - and around halfway down the shoulder. It doesn’t make the shoulders or sleeves any smaller.

The liner also has two patch pockets on the chest, so you don’t lose access to those, just to the larger pocket on the left hip. It is available to order on the MTO page of the PS Shop. There are no current plans to stock it going forwards.

The donegals

The liner is pictured inside the special edition of the donegal this year: a heavy navy wool from Fox Brothers.

We started these special editions last year with a W Bill camelhair, and it went down very well. The camel sold out within a week, and people have asked about it ever since. Again, MTO allows us to offer more colours in the donegal, and more expensive cloths too - as Fox is.

The material we chose this year is CT15 from Fox, a midnight heavy-set wool that wears warmer than its 26oz weight would suggest, due to that set and the flannel-like finish. Lucas had a sample made in it last autumn and it’s a beast, wearing easily warmer than the other donegal cloths and keeping him toasty all winter.

It’s therefore quite a different offering to the lighter weight navy we introduced a couple of years ago - this is less shiny, less of a business coat (although still pretty smart) and much warmer. The Fox special edition will only be available during the MTO period.

The last offering from the donegal coats in this MTO is four archive colours: charcoal, brown, mid-grey (also known and black/white) and the lighter weight navy

We get a few requests every year for the archive colours, so we added up all the little lengths that were with different suppliers - The Valet, Lafayette Saltiel, Private White, my wardrobe - and found we have enough for about 15 charcoal coats, 8 dark brown and 20 lightweight navy.

The mid-grey donegal is the only one of these that will be stocked in the autumn, but if people want to secure their size now, they can also order that. The weight of all the cloths is the standard 760g, except the lightweight navy which is 680g.

The knits

Knitwear is more straightforward. The two standard PS styles are the same, and many of the colours are the same as last year as well. The only difference is that we’re adding one new colour in the crewneck - oatmeal - and two colours in the rugby - charcoal and dark olive. That’s the new colours above.

The other colours available for MTO in the crewneck are navy, grey, charcoal, black, sky blue and lavender. Only navy and grey will be in stock in the autumn.

The other colours available for MTO in the rugby are navy, grey, brown, black and swan. Navy, grey and natural will be in stock in the autumn.

As most readers will be very aware, the cashmere crewneck is our version of that foundational wardrobe piece, while the rugby is slightly more unusual, being a dense heavyweight that is rarely offered these days but we wanted to bring back. The colours are all shown below.

The indulgent shawl-collar cardigan is not being offered for MTO this year, and may be discontinued. If you've been thinking about one for a while, it's worth getting one that's in stock now.

The terms

These items are all available now, on the MTO page of the PS shop. They will be available there until April 26th. Payment can be made in full or half on ordering, half on delivery.

The knits will be delivering at the beginning of October, and the donegals and liners at the end of that month. Both timed hopefully for when they’re most needed.

As a reminder, this is made to order, so these pieces are non-refundable and non-exchangeable.

Everything will be available to see in the PS Pop-Up, which is in our showroom from April 23-25. The hours are 11am to 7pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm. All other details on events here

Love the liner idea and the trust it places in readers! Is that a new watch I spy in the light-blue sweater photo?

Carl

I love the Donegal coat and will probably buy the liner. I own the light grey coat and used to own the brown (sold it due to weight loss). I am now thinking about buying the lightweight navy. My problem is that the wardrobe is quite full and I already own a bespoke navy DB and the Bridge Coat. I wonder if there is a niche where the navy donegal works better than either of them. I dont really like the bespoke coat as I ordered it in a too lightweight wool and doesn’t drape that well.

Jack

Unfortunately, it doesn’t show the video comparing liners between different sizes (or, if it’s meant to be a link, it isn’t active). Additionally, would it be possible to add another—perhaps more technical—video showing the process of attaching the liner inside the coat?
Also, what size are you wearing in the photos that show the coat in the new Fox fabric?

Jack

Thank you, Simon. I somehow misinterpreted and thought you had a video showing how both coats fit on you with the liner.

As for the fastening video, I’m mainly curious about how it attaches at the back—whether there is any fastening there at all, or if it’s meant to be attached only at the sides.

Charles

Hi Simon,
When you say ” this is less shiny, less of a business coat (although still pretty smart) and much warmer”, you refer to the Fox special edition, right?
Charles

Charles

Great to hear, thank you Simon. Would you still wear it with a suit and a tie?

Charles

Thank you Simon.
Would you recommend to size up due to the nature of the fabric?
I see you’re wearing a size 5 instead of your usual size 4 in the photos but maybe it’s because of the liner (sorry if you’ve answered the question before but since it’s MTO I’d like to be sure of the size).

Jonas

I love the fact that a dark olive Cashmere Rugby is offered this time! I own the grey and dark brown version and have enjoyed them so much. Olive is such a lovely colour and I hoped that you would offer one at some point in time. One other thing: you are talking about the Fox midnight navy heavy-set wool as if it has a 26oz weight, however the Fox websites talks about a 19/20/21oz weight.

A

Thanks, Simon

For those of us with more than one donegal, is there a way of getting a second (or third) set of buttons; rather than having to buy a liner for each one?

Will

Thrilled about the liner, which will make a great coat even more versatile and hopefully warm enough for anything winter can throw at me in Central Europe. Order immediately placed. 🙂 In case it’s accidental, a warning that the first link in that section of this article currently takes you to the Donegal’s page on the shop, not the Liner’s one.

I’ve been umming and ahhing for a couple of years about whether to get a small or medium navy shawl; as the small’s sold out (and I erred toward the medium when trying it on at last October’s London pop-up), the decision was, perhaps thankfully, made for me. Order finally placed; I’ll be cosy and happy, though my wallet doesn’t thank you. 🙂 May I ask why there’ll be no pre-order and even a possible discontinuation of this gorgeous piece?

Will

Hi Simon,

I’ve received the shawl and am in love… Two questions: other than never hanging it up (obviously) or never wearing it (out of the question), do you have any tips for minimising the oft-discussed lengthening over time; and how do I respond when my wife asks me how much it cost?!

A black Exmoor sweater and a navy Finest Crewneck came in the same shipment, both also beautiful (though I personally would prefer the neckline of the latter just a smidge higher). Bouncing off this article’s made-to-order theme, do you think you’ll ever offer MTO for the Finest Crewnecks in other colours? I can imagine a dark green (like one of the Finest Cardigans, for example) would be lovely.

P.S. I hope you didn’t mind my not thanking you when you previously replied… I sometimes refrain from doing so here so as not to clutter up the comments (but now that I type that out, that seems sad!).

Pete

Hi Simon,
Just wanted to clarify a couple of things:
For the liners- is this pre-order the only opportunity, with no plans to offer them again for next year’s pre-orders?
For the Donegal coats- once the archive fabrics sell out, will they be available to pre-order again next year, or is this the last time?
Thank you

Prince Florizel of Bohemia

Sorry if I’m posing an obvious question, however, if I pre-order Bruce Chinos and they don’t fit, will I be alble to return them for refund? Thank you.

Prince Florizel of Bohemia

Thanks.

Sean

A very well received post, Simon! I’d love to pull the trigger on the brown overcoat but I’m slightly unsure on the sizing (50 vs 52 – and I’ve also watched the videos on instagram so thanks for that).

Am I correct in saying that, if I wait until the pop up, there’s a good chance the size I’m after may have already sold out as it has been produced in limited quantities?

As ever, thanks!

Den

Hi, this is great 🙂 but ‘swan’ doesn’t appear in the drop down for the rugby on the link provided
Thanks

Kristian (2)

The New navy is gorgeous, and I realt like the idea with the liner, and that you har used a wool padding. I do have two questions though; first, is the wool in the padding a lofty soft wool, or something more dense, perhaps felted wool? Second, how long is the lining? Is it the full length of the coat, or cut a little shorter so that those who have shortened the length of the coat will be able to use the lining without having to shorten the lining as well?

Colin

Hi Simon, is it correct that the oatmeal crewneck is already sold out?

Chris

Hi Simon,
I purchased the lightweight navy last year and couldn’t put my finger on something about it that wasn’t quite right and i think it is the more ‘buisness like’ shiny fabric you refer to, which changes the feel and style of the coat. Unfortunately i couldn’t return it as i bought from PW direct (as you had no stock) and asked them to shorten sleeves before sending it out to me. Also, i think the fabric is much lighter than some of the close ups on the website suggest especially the blue in it. If you were to have one out of that and this fox navy which one would it be? I like the versatility of the lighter weight but much prefer the look of this new one.

TAC

Is it possible to pre order the liner in size 8?

Michael

Hi Simon,
Are we looking at the tapered t-shirt to be back in stock within this month?
Cheers,
Michael

Alex D

Thanks for the article Simon. I really want to check out the new Fox Navy donegal at the pop up before purchasing to be sure on sizing but am I understanding it correctly that theres a chance the fabric could be sold out by the time of the pop up?

Lukas

Is the lighter weight navy also an archival fabric?

Alex D

Also will a donegal with a liner be available to try on at the pop up as well?

Would be nice to see it in person. Thanks

Jonathan

Hi Simon, I live in Rome and have enjoyed the brown donegal for the past many years throughout the winters. I’m now moving to NYC and fear it will not be warm enough for the winters there. Do you think the liner would solve that problem? Or would you say even with the liner, the winters in the northeastern US are too cold for this coat?

Rand

Simon,

Is the PS shawl collar cardigan the same as what A&S currently stocks?

https://shop.anderson-sheppard.co.uk/products/12ply-cashmere-cardigan-grey

Best,
Rand

Daniel

Hi Simon,

Can I just check if the rugby is available to pre-order in XXS as I did see discussion that seemed to be confirmed on the pre-order article last month. Sillily I only remembered after placing my order in XS though!

Karl Maris

Please advise as to whether the Donegal Coat (with the new liner) or the English Tweed Overcoat would likely be warmer. (Perhaps this is too subjective a consideration to accurately evaluate.) As well, has the sold out English Tweed Overcoat been discontinued? Finally, although the Friday, March 6, 2026 article titled “Spring Summer 26 on the Permanent Style Shop” indicated that the cotton crewnecks would be available in March, there is obviously a delay. Since I suspect that these sweaters will sell out quite quickly, have you any idea on when these items will be listed for sale? Thanks.

SC

Could you please post the measuremrnts for the liner? I have a balmacaan from a different manufacturer and I am wondering whether this liner might fit in it. I have the same issue with the coat being not quite warm enough for the coldest days. Thank you,

SC

Understood – thanks very much.

Travis

Hi Simon,

Love the new navy Donegal – are you wearing a size 4 or a size 5 in the photos?

Travis

Thanks Simon!

Christian

I’m sorry to hear that you’re discontinuing the shawl collar, it is a beautiful peace, and I have been saving up for one. Do you have any recommendations to similar shawl collars?

Christian

Yeah I know don’t worry, being a student just makes it a bit harder to save up to it, but thank you anyways

Mark

Hi Christian,
As an owner of – perhaps – too many shawl collar cardigans may I suggest you look at the Colhays model? The A&S version is very plush, loosely knitted – great for lounging about in but quite oversized. Whatever you buy it will be an investment piece. The Surfer model by Beggxco is beautiful too.
M

Christian

Thanks for the suggestion, I already have a William Lockie lambswool shawl collar so I am more looking for a cashmere one. I had been looking at the Beggxco models though, do you have experience with both the Surfer and the Yacht model? From the picture, the surfer seems a bit thin, but maybe that is just my imagination?

PS. I am not a native English speaker, so if the language seems a bit rude or primitive, I apologise.

Noel

Hi Simon,

Regarding the liner, my Donegal fits a little snug at the top and I was thinking of getting a tailor to let it out a bit. Would that be fine with the liner ? Presumably it will simply be placed slightly inwards from the edges ?

Noel

Ok, and that would still be true if I went with the larger liner (4, my coat is size 3) ?

BC

Hi Simon,
How versatile is the light blue? Will it pair with cold or warm brown tailored jackets or trousers for work? What about with jeans?

BC

Sorry, I should’ve been more precise. I mean the light blue cashmere crew (you linked to the launch article on the navy donegal).

BC

So many choices. Do you think the charcoal crewneck would work with blue denim? For that matter, what about black? I know grey and navy are probably the most versatile, but I’m looking for something different that I could still wear with denim (and not necessarily just black, faded black, or very dark blue denim). Many thanks for your patience.

Anon

Hi Simon,

The MTO offering looks great as expected.

I have the charcoal in a size 4 for a number of years and love it. I was hoping to pick your brain having watched your videos on sizing. I feel like the 4 is now a little snug on my shoulders. I am not as tall as you and so had it shortened. When sizing – do you feel your 4 fits well over a jacket/suit? Does the liner change that?

I was minded to order the Fox Cloth in 5 with a liner but would be keen to know it would work well over a jacket. I appreciate what you said in the video about it being a degree of personal style but would be good to get an idea of what works for you/how you account for that type of layering when sizing (both the Donegal but generally too if possible).

Thanks in advance

Anon

Thanks Simon,

Really useful. I will go ahead with the size 5.

Could I ask you say it is less of a business jacket – is that because it is woolier/heavier rather than not being suited to wearing with a jacket/suit in style?

Noel

One final question, can this MTO be combined with the chinos pre-order to save on postage? Or are the dates too far apart from each other?

Guy T

Hello Simon, I rather like the Donegal in the Fox heavy wool, if I could ask a question regarding the lining please? Is it the same ‘bronze’ as the other coats, if so how easy is it to replace for a lining in a similar shade of navy (maybe by Pinnas & Needles or The Valet) please? Thank you.

Also undecided on size but have a couple of weeks to decide. I usually go for a PWVC 3 but find that a little snug over a jacket but think the 4 maybe a little loose without a jacket, particularly around the chest.

Calle

Could you go back to using DHL for shipments to Sweden. I placed an order on the 25th, it was sent on the 27th and it will arrive on the 8th. UPS sucks in Sweden.

adamcobabe

I’ve bought a dark gray size 5 Donegal coat, but I would love to double check the sizing at your Trunk Show later this month. Would it be possible to potentially change my size choice before the order goes to cutting? Or is Private White going to start right away? Would love to double check and lock it in at the Trunk Show.

Kristian

Love the liner idea! Is it basically a gilet/vest—is that what you mean by halfway down the shoulder? Any utility in it being worn as a standalone piece or would look odd?

SSLDN

Hi Simon,
Recognising the your point on retrofitting lining buttons, have you considered putting buttons for the liners into the new coats you are making? Many high end brands (eg Coherence) have the buttons added as an option for linings. I don’t have a liners, but am not bothered by the buttons being added to my coats for a that contingency.
Just a thought.
All the best

Calle

The Fox Navy is plain and the lightweight is a herringbone. Doesnt that make the Fox version more formal?

Calle

Thanks,

I get that its ”tougher” in style. Which one is best to stand against bruises and things that may damage it?

Jamie

Hey Simon,
I imagine it’s difficult to say but are colours like the swan rugby and charcoal crewneck likely to be mainstays of the pre-order lineup or swapped out next time? I’m at a point where I have a solid base of knitwear colours after the current preorder and would probably venture into more niche or unusal colours next time, so just wanted to check if this potentially the last opportunity.

Rajan

Good day Simon,

I am deciding on placing a MTO order for the donegal coat.

After going through the colors and the articles, it seems like the brown version is a bit heftier, is that true still?

Is the brown a reasonable option for optimum versatility? I don’t have a proper coat currently (my last one I had to sell) and would like to stick to really just one as my climate doesn’t really demand more.

Thank you

Rajan

Sorry Simon, I realize the fabrics are mostly 760gsm.

That seems quite a bit heartier than before and better as a winter coat? Certainly with a liner.

Regarding versatility, I rarely wear a worsted suit (just weddings and funerals really).

Could brown be a good color or would charcoal be better for versatility?

Assuming both are indeed 760, it’s a tough choice!

Richard

A few questions if you don’t mind…The new navy Fox Donegal, you mention it’s warmer than the other donegals. In that case, would you still recommend the liner?
Regarding the knitwear. I’m considering another rugby, I already own the navy and love it but weighing up either the grey or charcoal. I think I have a preference for the charcoal but only because I’m not sure how the grey might sit with my grey hair/white/silver hair. Ditto with the crew. What would you advise Simon? How versatile might the charcoal be? Would it pair with light/mid blue denim or ecru denim?

Richard

Thank you Simon and one last question. You mentioned somewhere about now wearing a L in the cashmere crewneck and in the past your suggested sizing advice for the cotton crewneck (Speciale) was to wear the same as the cashmere crew. Does that mean you would now be a L in the cotton crew too? I bought the latte crew in M last year and the fit is 90% there, I think but I’m thinking the L may well be the size to go for.

Joel C.

Simon,
I’m guessing the liner would work on the first iteration of the Donnegal coat. I know there have been improvements such as a sleeve width since that first one came out that I have.

I also have another question about the donegal, when I button mine up mine likes to show the whining in the button flat and not really light closed, even though it fits really well and there’s plenty big enough. Do you think there’s anything I can do to keep it closed when it’s buttoned up? Again, I have the very first iteration in the dark gray donegal.

Joel C.

Haha, lovely auto correct. My button placket seems to stay open when I button my coat up. Thereby it shows the lining a bit. I didn’t know if this was a problem on the early coats or what I might could do to ensure the placket doesn’t pucker when buttoned.

Joel C.

Thanks. I might send some pics. I feel it’s defiantly not too tight, but I could be mistaken.

Joel C.

*definately

Mike

Hi Simon

I noticed that the dark grey and brown are all sold out for the MTO. I know you mentioned earlier that these are the last remaining batches of those specific cloths. Is there any chance that some of the MTO’s for these cloths won’t fall through for whatever reason? If so, will it go to one of us on the waiting list? Also, since these cloths are gone, then would you say there’s a decent chance that there might be similar colors in brown or dark grey in the future that you’ll offer from a different weave and cloth? Thank you

Joel C.

Any plans on green oxfords being restocked?

Sean Breezie

Hello!

Will you be restocking the blue Oxford fabric?

Thanks

Sean Breezie

Hey, just bumping this

Dan

Hi Simon,
I noticed the rugby in natural has appeared on the MTO page despite not being mentioned as available for MTO. I assume it is available if it’s there?

Bao Tao

Hi, Bao here from the Support Team. That was indeed a mistake on our part and it’s now available for purchase. Knock yourself out!
