The pre-owned sale on Saturday – and Zurich, Rubato events
This coming Saturday we will be trying a new type of PS event - a pre-owned clothing sale.
Everyone accumulates too many clothes when they love menswear, and finding a way to give them a new, loving home is both useful and responsible. The idea with the event is that we’re bringing together a group of such people, and readers have the chance to and try and buy their things in person, rather than just online.
The event is this Saturday, September 6th, from 10am to 6pm in the Permanent Style Showroom (37 Harley Street).
In other news, we’re holding a joint event with Trunk in Zurich on September 18th, so please come if you’re not too far away. There will be book signing, and we’ll be bringing a size run of our new outerwear launch.
And, Rubato have just announced they’ll be coming back to London in November. They will be at the PS showroom from November 20th to 22nd.
On the pre-owned sale, the idea is that we’re starting with members of the PS team plus a couple of friends. It’s myself, Lucas, Shun, Alex Natt and Luke Walker. This is about as much as we can fit in the showroom, because everyone has so many great things to bring. But in the future, if it’s popular we can expand the format and include readers as sellers.
The nice thing about our group is that there’s a real range of sizes, so there should be something for everyone. My old tailoring is a 38-inch chest, but some things will be 40, Luke is smaller than me, Alex a size bigger, while Shun is a 40 or 42, Lucas a 44 or 46. So five sizes covered, and things like shoes will be similar.
Highlights of what I will be bringing include:
- Three bespoke suits
- A few pairs of bespoke shoes
- Several handmade shirts
- A Loro Piana bomber
- And about a half dozen PS samples
Alex has some Rubato, Bryceland’s and Anthology, plus some ex-Clutch stock. Shun has shoes from Edward Green, Gaziano & Girling and JM Weston, a Connolly coat and a fair bit of Drake’s. Lucas always has some weird and wonderful vintage, with a good chunk of Armani. I know he’s got too many shoes as well!
I’m planning to send everything of mine that doesn’t sell to Marrkt. That way readers outside London can see some of it online and get a chance to participate. I’ll ask the others if they fancy doing that as well.
Last time, a few readers asked where the showroom is. It’s 37 Harley Street, a beautiful old Bath-stone building on the corner of Harley Street and Queen Anne Street. It’s very close to Oxford Street, just a couple of minutes walk. We’re on the first floor - buzz to be let up.
I’m pleased to be coming to Zurich for the first time, as there are a few readers I want to connect with. Do come by the Trunk store and get a cocktail. They’ve also just got their order of The Style Guide and Casual Style Guide, which have just been restocked, plus the magazine.
It was a shame Rubato won’t be coming to New York with us this autumn, so it’s great they’re coming to London. They’ll be in the showroom November 20th-22nd, Thursday to Saturday. Times and details as normal, all listed on the Events page of PS, as are the other events.
The guys have some new categories they’ve already started teasing, but I’ve yet to see any of it, so pretty excited.

I’ll be there, hope to find some treasures!
Just wanted to say thanks for setting up the pop up today. It was fantastic to rummage and nab a few incredible items. Thanks a lot Alex for letting me steal a lot of your incredible pieces!
So pleased you liked it Rob, it seems to have gone down really well. We’ll definitely be doing it again
I’d love to come, alas it’s also the day of my son’s first birthday, so not sure the wife will sanction a visit on that day!
Ah well, hopefully you’ll see some things online later, JR
He won’t remember it. But he will appreciate a great piece when you retire it and hand it down in many years…
Hey Simon. Is the ‘coat launch’ mentioned in the Trunk advert a new PS release (or something separate from Trunk)?
A new PS release. Our new coat for the season will launch a week or so before the Trunk event, so we’re going to bring just that one over to Zurich for people to see
Excited to see the release article in a week or two!
Hi Simon,
Long time reader, first time poster.
Are there any plans to bring back the Motor Trench this year?
Thank you,
Antony
Hey Antony,
No, the motor trench was discontinued a while ago I’m afraid. No plans for it to return
Dear Simon,
May I recommend adding the “Permanent Style Showroom” to Google Maps so readers might find it more easily?
Cheers
Ah yes, good point SS, thanks
as an American, along with about half of your readers if I recall correctly, hoping you’ll consider holding the same event in New York, perhaps focusing on smaller items that might be easier to transport, such as accessories, jewelry, etc.
Thanks Howie, yes we certainly could. See you in October
Don’t forget anything you bring with the intention of selling would be liable for tariffs. Maybe safer/simpler to arrange for US readers/contacts to bring their own things to sell.
True
Hello Simon,
Love the photo at the bottom of the article. Simple and clean.
Teaser for the PS Magazine vol.2 cover? 👀
Thanks! But no, that was in this article
excellent, welcome to switzerland – i look forward to meeting you in person 😉
simon r.
You too Simon
Wish I could make it to the pre-owned sale: what a great idea. What would you think about a blog comment thread specifically for advertising pre-owned? I have some Permanent Style pieces that don’t quite fit me and I’d love a chance to swap for another size or pass them on to someone else who gets it.
That’s a nice idea David, yes
I guess another approach would be to allow ads for used items on the specific posts describing that item.
For example, the commenter Antony would be able to go to the Motor Trench post and see that I have a size 5 I’d like to sell 😉
Ah yes, nice idea David
That would help quite a few readers, i guess. I have a Brycelands Western in size 38 to sell or exchange for a 40.
Good to know, cheers Tom
Which of your suits and shoes are up for sale, Simon?
I’m just trying to work that out, not finalised yet!
I’ll be there for the Trunk event as I live in Zurich, looking forward to it!
Wonderful, see you there Phil
It is a pleasure to hear that you will be coming to Zurich.
Am I correct in understanding that you will be launching a new coat during your visit?
Will there be an opportunity to try it, and will it be available in the store afterwards?
A warm welcome to Zurich.
Thank you Petrus.
It is our new outerwear launch with Private White, which will launch on the PS site a week or so earlier. We will bring a size run to Zurich, so yes you can try it, but purchases will be through the PS store as per usual
New coat is the brown English Tweed isn’t it….
Nope!
Whaaat! Damn consider me stumped because I was way too sure on that haha
Ref the A/W list – the English Tweed is coming in October, this is the ‘New outerwear project’ in September
Ahhhh yes I remember that now!
Your comment about those who love clothes having too many clothes completely resonates.
The new owners will be thrilled.
Exactly.
As I am coming to London at the end of September, is the showroom open to the public at some regular hours? I would love to see what you guy have and try things on. As I am new to the luxury clothes game sizing is still hard for me over the computer.
Hi Joe,
No I’m afraid not, we don’t have our stock in the showroom all the time, there wouldn’t be room. It’s only at the pop-ups currently
Had fun today at the sale.
Luke’s stories were just getting fascinatingly inappropriate (used silk thong, anyone?!…..) but sadly my train back to the West Country was calling.
I’m sure there’s mileage in a wider in-person sale for PS readers at some point; even on a ‘pay to pitch’ basis.
Let me know if you realise you forgot to bring a charcoal finest polo and a pair of PS shorts…. 😅
Thanks Ant, it was lovely having you here, and it’s gone so well. We’ll definitely do it again, and definitely involve more people next time as well
Oh man, I always miss those. Last time I was in NYC, it was a week before the PS event. This time I’ll be in London between the 8th and 11th of November…
Did anything survive for the ones who couldn’t make it there? If so, when will they drop on marrkt, the competition is fierce out there in the virtual markets…Hope it was fun!
It was, thanks Alex. There were some things left over, so they’ll go to Marrkt this week some time. So I guess another week or two after that before they’ll go on there. Mostly my things, a few from Shun and Alex
Hey Simon,
will there be more than the wool walker to try on from the ps store in zurich? I am really interested in your knitwear and your other coats, so i would love to try some of them on!
Hey Julian,
No just the Wool Walker I’m afraid, there isn’t room to bring a full range
Simon, not sure how best to reach out other than with the blog so this probably doesn’t need to go up on the chat board unless you think it’ll help other readers.
I’ve loved your blue Disguisery tweed jacket (W Bill) since your original piece on it. The color and depth is unmatched for that fabric. Unfortunately for me- the fabric was discontinued before i could have something made. Alas I’ve had no luck finding a comparable fabric.
We’re about the same size- was that jacket on your list of things to resell on Markkt? If so and still available, perhaps we could work something out? I am in the US so was naturally unable to make
it to the London pop-up! If you instead know of other tweeds that come close to that one, perhaps I’ll still have something made. I do appreciate your time and insight.
Hey Mike,
No worries to post it here, that’s fine.
Unfortunately I gave that jacket away a few years ago, sorry. I will keep an eye out for anything that looks similar though
Too bad. I’d say build a bigger closet to keep all these lovely clothes acquired over time but you do live in London so……
This leads me to an interesting question which might be of interest to other readers. Are there colleagues of yours in the cloth industry who are adept at running down discontinued bolts or lengths of fabric when a customer requests something specific? Or tailors that might keep older stock but are still willing to sell the fabric to a customer who may not want/like that particular tailor’s house cut? WB12123 is the example here for me but there may be other cloth that readers “wish” they could acquire like a vintage cashmere.
Thanks again Simon. PS remains the best site for menswear knowledge and advice. Period.
Is it really true, as is generally assumed in this forum, that the Swiss spend a lot of money on very expensive cars and expensive designer brands?
I have a lot of contact with Swiss lawyers and travel to Zurich two or three times a year. It seems to me that most of my Swiss colleagues prefer to appear modest and find flaunting money rather distasteful. This would also fit in with the country’s Calvinist history.
Could it be that such cars and clothing, as here in Vienna, are mainly worn by oligarchs and similar people from abroad?
Just saw Rubato’s new collection and there are so many stunning pieces as expected! I want to ask if you think the style and color of the cardigan in the link below can be versatile?
https://www.atemporubato.com/products/button-through-polo-in-natural-camelhair
Hard to know yet Joe, I think I have to see it in person I’m afraid.
Simon, apologies but for the life of me I can’t remember where I read about it but I’m considering purchasing the roll neck from Rubato in the colour dunn. Did I read somewhere that you sent it back?
I must admit, I’m also tempted by the graphite colour. Can you give me a brief ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ for each? Thank you.
Yes I did. The piece was great, but personally I just find that roll necks don’t suit me that much unless they’re in quite dark colours, so navy or charcoal. They look a little bulky and don’t flatter around the face as much in lighter colours. They look great under a coat, but not so much on their own
