Friday Polos, Linen Overshirts and T-shirts: The last of summer
There are quite a few things to catch up on with regards to PS products, and it feels like readers have quite a few questions too, given the number that have come up in comments. So it might be good to have all of those answered in one place.
First, the tail end of the summer products. The linen overshirts were our most popular product last year, so this year we bought a lot of them. It's been nice to see sales continuing to drip through over the summer - as people start to go away, for example - rather them all being sold in April.
All of the brown and most of the navy have sold out, but there is still stock of the black (shown above on me) and the tobacco (shown below on Manish). I like how Manish combines the tobacco with brown - I wouldn't have thought to do that. For more information on the other clothes shown, see the bottom of this article.
A couple of other summer things have been restocked in the past month:
- Hand-Framed Sweaters: Restocked and with a smattering left, more in navy than in cream
- New Friday Polo: Restocked in navy, white and a new mid-grey. Good stock in most of these. Again, we bought more this year
And a few other summer things are imminent:
- Chambray shirts: Restocking on Monday
- Tapered T-shirts: Restocking on Monday
- Finest Polos: Should be restocked in a week or two
Lastly, unfortunately the summer shirt that we were working on has been delayed and delayed. It's now too late to release it for this summer, so it will have to wait until next spring unfortunately.
Then, we're starting to get into restocks of winter products, as some of this is cloth to be made up for the colder months, and in general I know readers like to get ahead of the game.
Cloth
- Next week we will restock the PS Harris Tweed and the PS Shetland Tweed, as well as bring back three of the donegal-coat materials - the charcoal, the brown (above) and the grey herringbone
- We will also be bringing back the PS Plaid, but in a lambswool this time instead of cashmere, making it more affordable
- There will also be a new cloth collaboration with Fox
Winter products
- The Bridge Coat was restocked last week. We always have stock at the same time as Private White, FYI, and of course appreciate it when readers buy from us
- The grey herringbone Donegal coat will be restocked next week too. The Wax Walker will follow before the end of the summer, and the English Tweed (below) will be later in the Autumn. As ever, signing up to the shop mailing list, or product waiting list, is the best way to get first access
- We will be releasing a new colour in the Donegal coat this winter, plus one other new product with Private White. There will be information on the new Donegal colour when the grey herringbone relaunches, but nothing else on Autumn/Winter products until our normal forward-looking summary in August
I think that's it. If anyone has any questions on any of this, do please let us know. But there won't be any other information on the Autumn/Winter things for the moment.
Clothes shown with the linen overshirt on me:
- Rubato black knitted T-shirt
- PS grey Cashmere Crewneck
- Armoury linen trousers (from this suit)
- Black Baudoin & Lange suede Sagans
- Cartier 'Must' watch on green alligator strap
And on Manish:
- Brown long-sleeved polo from Uniqlo
- Scott Fraser classic wide-leg trousers in linen/cotton
Thanks Simon. Is a summer shirt still in the mix for this year?
Apologies Rob, I thought I had included that. I’ll add it now. (The answer is no, unfortunately)
It’ll be summer down here in the antipodes soon 😃
would it be possible to separate product articles, such as this one, from the mon-wed-friday schedule?
It’s probably not feasible to write three articles a week plus these updates, but I can try and keep any shorter or more informational articles such as event announcements and shop updates into the Friday slot, so there is that separation
Psychologically, I feel the reverse may be a better strategy. Do the ‘business updates’ on Monday as most people probably have less time/are less in the mood for a nice long article on the finer things in life. Whereas on Friday readers may welcome an nice article on fine tailoring/clothes as they gear up for the weekend. Overall, you have been doing a good job of balancing editorial and shop, not always easy and you should be careful going forward not to lose sight of the main reason people go to this site. Just look at Hodinkee
True. And good point on timing, I hadn’t thought about that. I’ll leave it as Friday for the moment, but interested in others’ thoughts on the best day. I think I’m used to thinking about me being at a computer more during the week, and excited for any kind of distraction
I like a substantive article on Monday to take the edge off the week, and a shopping article on Friday when I am in a more relaxed mood!
Perhaps I misunderstood something, but wasn’t there a charcoal Dartmoor coming as well? And what about the black Dartmoor and the black Fines Polo, are they retired? It is a pity if this is the case!
The charcoal Dartmoor was actually mid-grey – a mistake there in the preview article.
The colours in the Finest Polos haven’t been retired, we just swap them round every year, keeping some and adding others. All votes for next year welcome!
Thank you. Then here’s a vote for the return of black both in the Finest Polo and in the Dartmoor!
Thanks for the update. Will the article on boat shoes I think you mentioned be published soon too?
Yes, certainly in the next couple of weeks
Oh good.
Thanks for the update, Simon. When should we expect delivery of the cashmere crewneck some of us pre-ordered
?
September
Will it be also available around the same time in the PS store for some of us who didn’t pre-order?
Yes – those details are in the original launch article here as well
My wife and I often holiday in November and April, e.g. in Morocco or Egypt., to shorten the miserable British winter. Relations, neighbours and friends do likewise so our shopping patterns are not seasonal. We shop for holidays just before we go so it would be useful to be able “summer” clothes (polos, shirts and shorts etc) all year round.
Thanks Kent, yes we have had the same request occasionally from those in the southern hemisphere too. It is more expensive to keep stock available all the time, but we are trying to have them available for longer gradually as we can
Is the chambray cloth being restocked?
Yes, but unfortunately the previous batch had some errors so it is being rewoven. It shouldn’t be too long hopefully
Thanks Simon. Is this chambray cloth exclusive to Permanent Style? Or is this the same chambray that 100hands uses for other partners over the world. The reason I ask is I have a similar shirt that looks like it is the same fabric and it even has the same “selvedge”.
It is exclusive to use, Wen. The selvedge would only reflect that it might be from the same mill
Hi Simon. Regarding the Donegal fabric, are you doing the same thing from last year where we order them MTM, or are you selling the fabric directly?
Just the fabric directly. We only have capacity for one or two MTO programmes a year
Any plans to bring back the Motor Trench in Navy?
No, sorry
Hi Simon,
Thanks for this useful update. Good to hear the Donegal coat is on the way. Just a few questions:
Given its imminent arrival will it be available to try on for size at William Crabtree any time soon?
Assuming it isn’t, can you advise on whether you’d describe the cut as ‘a-line / semi a-line’? I’m thinking akin to the John Simon’s or Anatomica coats in this style.
Whilst I did try on at your recent pop up, there was only a size 6. I did have a follow up discussion with you in comments about sizing up from a 4 to 5 to get a fuller slightly oversized fit.
I am on the waiting list and wouldn’t like to miss out.
Thanks again for a great and objective blog.
Have a good weekend.
Hey Stephen,
It will be available to try at Crabtree, but not until the Autumn as usual, so no not for when you will need it.
I’d describe it as semi-A line. It’s not as full as those others, and so I’d stand by my advice to go for the slightly larger size.
Cheers
Thank you
Hi Simon
Could you give a more precise time they’ll be available to try on? I’ll be down in London mid-September and would love to try on the Donegal, but is that a bit too early?
Hey Mateusz,
I’m afraid that will be too soon, yes. They will probably be in there during October
Hey Simon, I was just about to place an order for my winter jacket to my tailor but it seems like I need to wait! Do you have any brief timeline on when the PS Plaid and Fox collaboration cloths will be released?
Many thanks,
Jack
Cheers Jack. It should be within two weeks
In that case, I shall get my question out of the way now. With the caveat that it is all a matter of taste and one’s own personal style…how do you think the new plaid would make up as a softly structured double breasted?
My sense was that the cashmere fabric would have still made it if feel marginally more formal (confirmed by seeing Pino Peluso’s Insta post of a DB version), but I’m wondering if you feel new lambswool would help downplay the formality a bit.
For example, could it work as a tie-less jacket (yes, i like the occasional tie-less look with a DB, especially with knitwear), or with darker more formal denim? Or would it still feel a bit out of place in those scenarios.
I’ve been thinking about this since you sold out of the last run, and have yet to decide if I’d like it in a DB or single-breasted.
I think I’d probably err towards single-breasted, because the fabric change wouldn’t make that much difference to the formality, but the DB would be louder given the increased amount going on on the jacket
Understood, and appreciate the response. I was thinking of it in the same way one sees a DB plaid in some Ralph Lauren designs (seems to be more popular among women’s wear, but has always seemed as a fun subversion of expectations to me).
However, this has me leaning towards a single breasted, unless the fox cloth ends much simpler in design and tempts me. In which case – I will be very mad at you for continuing to have such good taste in designing cloth.
🙂
Thanks!
Yes I know what you mean Alexander, a DB like that can be cool. I think probably for something like black tie though, given it is that bit showier
Hey Simon, all sounding fantastic, particularly looking forward to that tapered tee restock on Monday.
I could be very tempted by the Donegal this year. I understand you probably don’t want to/can’t disclose what this years new colour is… but I’m asking myself, since you’ve more than covered the primary bases, what could it be? Two shades of grey, a brown, navy. Could we actually be about to see a black Donegal? Wow, that would be tricky but if anyone can make it work it’ll be you. Hopefully something dark?
No information I’d afraid CK, it only breeds more questions!
Simon,
I have a sizing question regarding the linen overshirt:
I measure 51 cm chest (pit to pit). Should I take the extra-small?
Hey Rui,
Can I suggest you look at the measurement chart and compare those measures to a shirt you already own? You’ll want it bigger than a normal shirt of course, but this is a much better way to get an idea of the fit than discussing body measurements
Hi Simon,
My apologies for my previous unclear message; the 51 cm chest is measured over a bespoke shirt laid flat.
Hi Simon,
My apologies for my rather unclear question; by 51 cm chest (pit to pit) I meant measured on a laid flat shirt. I hope I make more sense now.
Ah I see, sorry I should have picked up on that. If that’s a regular shirt, then an extra small is probably right, yes.
As with many things it does depend how loosely you like it to pick though – if you can, perhaps measure a lightweight jacket that you like to wear over a shirt as well, to get a sense of how much extra room this overshirt will have?
Thank you for the tip Simon.
Measuring a lightweight jacket/ overshirt from Private White, which is a 2, I have around 52 cm chest, laid flat.
Ok, sounds like an XS would be right then.
With the overshirts, keep in mind the washing advice – that a machine wash is fine but will cause some shrinkage. It’s actually a good way to shrink the size down a little if you need it
Thank you for the advice.
Order placed 🙂
Great products as always – I’ve loved everything I have purchased from the site, so keep up the great work! Will you be restocking the heather grey cashmere sweaters this fall/winter?
I did say we wouldn’t talk about other Autumn/Winter things, but this has already been mentioned – back in the spring when we did the pre-order for those sweaters. Yes we will, and more details are available on that post
Any update on the suede overshirts coming back in stock?
No more info on Autumn/Winter for the moment Anush…
Fingers crossed tightly for another run of the Suede Overshirts this fall. Dying to get one. I love my PS overshirts, they fit perfectly, they’re so easy to wear, and the tobacco suede used for the overshirt is the perfect shade.
They are coming, no worries there
Looking forward to the Ts on monday! And I hope you will redo the overshirts in black next year. Would also be amazing to see more year-round jackets like Drakes games blazers and chore jackets in a Permanent Style quality.
Which Casatlantic model is Manish wearing?
Not sure actually, let me check
Thank you
Sorry Robin, I checked and I have it wrong – they’re Scott Fraser classic wide-leg trousers in linen/cotton. I’ll change the article too
Ah, thank you, not to worry! Do I recall you had the El Jadija casatlantic model? I’m weighing up which to go for, and feel I tend to share your taste on casual trouser silhouette
Yes, I’ve tried two or three but prefer the El Jadida mostly
Hello Simon
https://www.atemporubato.com/products/nonpareil-t-shirt-in-noir-1
Is this the black knit shirt that you have from Rubato? It looks nice, but not a big fan of the chest pocket.
Actually mine is the model with a straight hem at the bottom, no ribbing. So it fits more like a T-shirt, less like a sweater.
I know what you mean about the pocket, though I do like having one with a pocket (I also have an Anthology with no pocket, and it is nice to have the option there)
I am usually not big in to pockets either, however on this specific one I dont mind. The way it is made and the black colour mean it doesnt stand out very much. In fact, after wearing it for a while, I hardly noticed it.
Thanks, Simon. Very helpful.
I ordered a hand-framed crewneck cotton sweater recently and it’s really, really good. Would you ever consider working with Speciale on a deep V neck version with similar proportions?
Hi John,
Perhaps, yes, thank you for the suggestion
Simon,
Have you ever considered your own roll neck whether that weight be light, medium or heavy? If not, could you suggest a seller?
Best,
Robert
We have, yes, but there are some very good ones out there. I’d suggest looking at the likes of Rubato, Bryceland’s and Colhays. Also William Crabtree for a more basic but still Scottish-made one
Simon,
Hope you are enjoying the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics.
For ordering the donegal cloth, say we need 2.5 meters for a jacket, do we order five 0.5 meters then? Would that come in a solid 2.5 meter bolt?
Cheers,
Rand
Yes you would, and yes it would.
It’s really an overcoating weight though, I’m not sure I’d recommend it for a jacket.
Thanks Simon, how many metres would you recommend for an overcoat?
It depends a lot on your height and how long you want the coat, Wen (as well as whether it’s a DB or SB). Best to ask a tailor
Hi Simon,
I was just wondering, do you have any future plans to introduce more colours to the tapered tee?
I have all four current colours and would happy buy others.
Thanks JSB. No current plans, just because the existing ones are so popular and it’s hard to keep even those in stock. But we will certainly look at it in the future
I think it would be great to see a dark green next, maybe?
I’ve noticed that when you hit the comment ‘button’ near the top of the article, it keeps opening in a new tab/web page rather than take the reader to the comments at the bottom of the same , if that makes sense. Just thought I might let you know.
Thanks, yes I’ll see if we can find the right shade.
Thank you, that was fixed but seems like it has come back… I’ll get it fixed now.
Clearly, as pointed out, the difficulty is both in keeping stock available and its associated costs, capacity etc as well as finding the right shade but as well as the green suggestion (although, admittedly, I already have a green I rather like) I think dark brown, and maybe something bolder like a sunflower sort of yellow. The latter is another I already have, but it’s a bit slim. Probably turning up back on marrkt soon enough.
I own 4 navy and 2 grey of the tapered t-shirt. And just ordered 2 white and 2 black. I dont really need more options but a darker grey or charcoal would probably be useful for many people. And maybe one in a ”cold” burgundy/bordeaux. Brown is generally a good color but not in a t-shirt.
Thanks Simon for the update! Any hope of bringing back the Escorial wool jacket fabric in the future? Or maybe something similar?
No, sorry Ernesto
Excited for these products Simon!
Can we expect the overcoats (both Donegal and English Tweed) to make a showing at the New York pop-up in October? I’d love to see them in person before buying.
Yes, we’ll have everything there
Simon, would you mind sharing some more clues on what the Foxcloth is going to be? Is it going to be for a coat, jacket, shirt, or trousers? Cheers.
Sorry Michael, no I’d rather not. It will be launched in a couple of weeks anyway
Any plans to restock the olive linen overshirt?
Not this year, no
I only find information about the cloth for the Chambray shirts but only size information about the finished shirt.
Sorry Carl, what’s your question here? You have information on the chambray cloth and on the sizing of the finished shirt
More about fit in general, collar style etc. I may have misser something.
I see. Well the fit and the collar are both deliberately the same as all the other shirts – do you have or have you tried any of the others Carl?
Yes! Thanks!
Hi Simon – would you be able to provide some standalone images of the Chambray (restock)?
Having happily purchased an Oxford from you, I’m interested in this but present images tend to largely obscure what I’m sure is a great shirt.
Appreciate anything you may be able to do here. Best, Matthew
Hey Matthew,
I don’t have any, but I can try to take some.
The reason the shirt is shown like that is that the focus is on the material – the shirt itself has the same collar and the same body shape as the oxfords
After getting rid of so many t shirts in the past year or so, it’s great to finally snag a couple of PS tees (although the only loopwheel ones I’d had so far were off marrkt, so the cost is… justified if I like them as expected) but I’m a bit amazed that less than 2 hours after I received the email, the whites were already gone again! Must seem a lot to manage the demand, suppose it’ll be a long time before I get a hold of that one…
Yeah sorry Zach, we ordered the absolute maximum we could, which was 50% more than last time, and they still went that fast…
Ah well, yeah I’d assumed you’d gotten however much you could. Hey ho, I’ll have to be faster next time. Set email notifications on and hope I’m not busy!
We need a stock countdown on each product page! The hype and fomo is real…
For curiosity’s sake, would you be willing to share how many t-shirts became stocked on Monday, or perhaps just an example (e.g., the white in medium, which I imagine was among those most in demand)? No worries if not. 🙂
Sure – there were 40 medium whites
The tapered t-shirts in white are harder to get hold of than taylor swift tickets! Sold out within 20 minutes of the email going out unfortunately.
I know, it’s crazy
Hi Simon, just want to know if you are wearing size M for the Friday Polo? As Navy size M is running out, is sizing up too ambitious? (I am 187cm and 78kg) Thank you!
I am, yes. Sizing up would be a fair jump – best to compare the measurements against a shirt you already own if you can
Hey Simon, I will reiterate what others have said — crazy how quick the t-shirts went! When do you anticipate getting another restock?
To be honest Colin, I really don’t know. We will re-order this week, but the last order should have taken four months and ended up taking seven. We will try to keep everyone as in touch as we can!
Just wanted to compliment you on the T-shirts. Mine came through today – sounds like it’s been a bit of a drag for you but they are awesome.
Amazing, thanks for letting me know Alex
It seems to be quite common for suppliers to make errors or have delays, unfortunately. I’ve heard similar issues when chatting with a store recently too. I would imagine these to be quite costly to the entire supply chain and end consumer (and not to mention the waste). If it is appropriate to share – what usually are the causes, and whether those could be avoided with process/technology advancements?
It varies a lot between manufacturers, but I’d say the most important things to note are that it is a supply chain, and a producer might equally be let down by their yarn supplier, or zip supplier, or wash house.
Secondly, most people in the chain have suffered the same issue: lack of skilled labour. We’re generally talking about labour-intensive production methods, and technology doesn’t help that much
Hi Simon,
How is the stock of navy Dartmoor size large doing? I’d like to pick one up for the winter, but I’m holding out for a few months to replenish my fisc. Will they be gone by then?
You’ll be fine BC, we have 27 left
